A few months ago, I shifted the main focus of my writing on this blog from “what we do” to how we come forward as human beings when practicing our craft—who we are.
I marked this change in emphasis with the release of two core series—Character and Presence and Cultivating Your Character—that I consider the center of gravity for the who we are perspective. I then asked several practitioners whom I respect to write guest posts about how they relate to these two series.
I have compiled the two series, the reflections of two master change practitioners, and my answers to questions on character and presence into a document that I am now making available as a free download.

I’m continuing with my answers to practitioners’ questions on character and presence. In this third post of the series, I address concerns about our tendency to “fall asleep” rather than come to terms with who we are and its place in practicing the craft.

I recently published two series outlining why I think character and presence are so important to change facilitators seeking mastery in our profession. Many people strongly resonated with this topic—the responses have been quite remarkable. In this light, several themes emerged in the questions practitioners have been asking me about all this, and I thought I would share a few of them, along with my answers.

I asked several practitioners whom I respect to write guest posts about how they related to two previously released series: Character/Presence and Cultivating Character. Marcelo Manucci, a seasoned change professional, is the third contributor to this series. Marcelo describes three traps that can impede the success of change practitioners (pride, hypocrisy, and deceit) when they fail to understand the impact of both “who we are” and “what we do” while managing change. Marcelo also poses two questions for keeping the principles of our “character” and “presence” actively engaged.

We’re continuing to unfold the story of Sara, a fictitious change practitioner who is on a journey to find out who she is and learn to redefine how she shows up with clients. After recouping from the draining victory over the “dragon,” Sara reengaged with the practitioners she had left behind at the beginning of her odyssey. She was excited about sharing her wonderful news and couldn’t wait to see them develop the strength and freedom she now enjoyed as a practitioner. But it didn’t go as she expected…

In this series, we’re exploring the implications of Joseph Campbell’s The Hero’s Journey, by following the story of a fictitious change practitioner named Sara. In my last post, we looked at the first of the four stages, Departure. In this post, Sara goes through the Initiation phase of the Journey, where she is tested, but then crosses a threshold that causes profound change in her. I’ll also offer some questions to help you explore whether this phase has relevancy for where you are in your quest.
